What is a gong bath?
Gong baths do not involve water or tubs – the term bath is figurative. Utilizing the resonance and meditative effect of gongs, singing bowls, tingshas, tuning forks and other instruments that are rich in harmonic frequencies, gong or sound baths help you relax and venture inward. The sound and vibrational energy of gongs provide a way of relaxing, calming and de-stressing as you bathe in the harmonics produced by a single gong or better still a whole group of gongs which create overtones said to be healing and balancing, working on numerous levels – mental, emotional and spiritual.
Gong baths are highly rejuvenating for the body and bring about an overall sense of relaxation, which can reduce stress as well as help develop a better ability to cope with stress, help move emotional blockages from trauma, and even stimulate altered states of consciousness.
What happens during a gong bath?
According to Richard Rudis, gong master and my gong instructor, the gong bath he teaches are based on his Buddhist studies and the physics of sacred geometry and how it relates to our composition both physically, mentally, and spiritually. The gong bath utilizes frequencies that the mind will entrain with the first step of creating a feeling of the sanctuary by stimulating the delta aspect of consciousness. This sanctuary is used as a platform to delve into the subconscious, the conscious mind, the physical being, the belief structures of who we are, all within a very receptive polytonal nature of the instruments or instrument itself.
Within the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, sound has been used for multiple purposes; but within the medical portion of that belief system, the sound is used to essentially alter consciousness and to alter one’s physical being. Continuing with the physical aspect, Richard has YouTube videos that show blood tests taken before and after one of his gong baths.
The change is remarkable just on the changes of blood nature – the blood cells being clumped together working slowly, the overall corpuscles being small in nature, toxins being present that appear like little black specks inside the cell and the white blood cells being dim before the gong bath with after gong bath results showing the corpuscles expanded which allows for better blood flow and oxygenation of the blood to nurture the body’s organs, white blood cells which are the warriors of our blood becoming brighter so the immune system is enhanced, and the little black toxin specks have moved from within the cells to outside the cell barrier to be eliminated from the body using sound, hydration, and meditation.
This is just scratching the surface of what happens during a sound bath. – You feel revitalized and reconnected – There is a heightened joy and bliss that comes from participating in a gong bath.
I just ordered my first gong – a 38” Paiste Earth gong. After I have finished my instruction with Richard, I will do a video presentation using my new gong and will post the video to this blog – Stay tuned!!!
